Should I buy Pepper Spray or a Stun Gun? What are the differences?

With so many horrible acts of violence occurring in the world every day, more people are looking
towards a means to protect themselves. Not everyone feels comfortable carrying a loaded weapon
around so they look to others means of non-lethal protection. A common question is what is better,
pepper spray or a stun gun? Both are effective means to stop an attacker or at least immobilize them
for a few minutes, just enough time for you to escape. So how do you know which is better?

Pepper spray is a spray that helps to cause an attacker great pain while allowing you to escape.
Pepper spray is an aerosol spray that is made up of different substances and natural forms of cayenne
pepper derivatives which tend to cause momentary blindness. When you spray this at an attacker or in
their area they go through a series of sensations which might make them feel as though their skin is
burning, eyes burning, swelling of the eyes, their nose burns, sinuses burn, and in many cases their
throat swells. All of this makes it extremely difficult to see or speak which gives you a few precious
moments to escape your attacker while they try to regain some thoughts about what they are doing.
Pepper spray allows you to aim at your attacker without having to be too close in proximity; this means
they have less ability to harm you when they can't reach you.

A stun gun on the other hand requires you to be close to your attacker in order to use it. A stun gun
classifies as a weapon that helps you to stop the attacker by giving them a short non-lethal high voltage
electric shock. The shock is enough to disable them for a few minutes without inflicting lasting pain or
damage. When your stun gun makes contact with an attacker you are giving them a charge of
electricity. It will only last for a few minutes, but it might be enough time for you to escape without harm
to yourself. The stun gun sends a shock that confuses the attackers nervous system and results in
causing movement and thought to be disabling, muddled and confusing for a short amount of time.
Most stun guns can be held in your hand much like a flashlight and receive their power from a 9 volt
battery, some models are rechargeable. During a struggle you don't have the time to make sure that
the charge connects with the attacker's skin. Stun guns relay a charge that is large enough to pass
through heavy clothing. The one downfall to a stun gun is that you have to be within reach of your
attacker in order to deliver the charge.

The type of weapon you decide on will depend largely on how comfortable you feel with it. For some
pepper spray is the perfect solution. Others might feel more secure with a stun gun. Either way, you
need to read over the laws for your area to make sure there are no restrictions for owing or using such
    protective instruments.
